Is phone etiquette changing in our society? This article is not really related to a big topic this time, but rather to a social behavior that I have noticed has changed in people.
In the past, about 10-15 years ago, it still felt normal that if you called someone and didn't reach them, the person you called would get back to you later.
And today? If I call my tax advisor and don't get through to anyone, no one calls back. If I call the doctor, I don't reach anyone, but no one calls back either. Even in the business sector, when I call offices or companies during working hours, no one answers. I also don't know whether it makes any sense to leave a message on an answering machine these days, it feels like 99% of people who have a voicemail, whether physical or virtual with a mobile phone provider, don't listen to it and don't call back.
Except for one of my customers, who assured me that he always listens to his voicemail on his smartphone.
Is it just me or have you noticed similar behavior?
Sure, people change over the course of time, but isn't it common decency to call the caller back, or do you think something like "If it's important, you'll call again"?
In general, I think that many people should think about their own behavior, because decency and order, whether as a German virtue or value or simply to show respect in the business world for the person calling, be it a potential customer or another company that wants to work together, it is not difficult to simply call back when you don't have time.
