And that's the crux of it, if a lot of electric cars then want a lot of power at the same time, then there's a problem.

An analogy to this is a battery, if you have a high power demand, the voltage of the battery drops, as if you would squeeze it and you get the current out, but thus loads the capacity. Scaled to the power grid, it means that many power plants must then bring a lot of power, and where does the electricity come from, if at night no sun shines and no wind blows? From abroad, and at high prices, with limited import capacities (as of 2023, this is 18 GW of capacity for Germany, which can be imported from neighboring countries via transmission lines).

But such concerns were not addressed in the public media classified as an unlikely scenario, and now the whole thing looks different. The much propagated electric cars will no longer be able to charge as you want, but you will probably have to reserve a time slot every day, so that you have enough time to be able to charge your car, because if too many charge, the Federal Network Agency wants "a temporary current rationing" enforce. This means that entire regions will be switched off.

 

According to the newspaper report, the agency considers local low-voltage grids in particular to be susceptible to faults. The network agency has therefore published a key points paper that provides for temporary power rationing for heat pumps and electric car charging stations in times of high network utilization.
